Clan Stuart of Bute traces its origins to the Stewards of Dol in Brittany, who arrived in Scotland in 1124 with David I. Rising to prominence as High Stewards of Scotland, the family secured the throne through marriage to Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce. Robert II granted lands including Bute, Arran, and Cumbrae to his son, Sir John Stewart. By 1498, Ninian Stewart became Hereditary Keeper of Rothesay Castle—a role the family holds today. In the 16th century, the family adopted the French spelling "Stuart" under Mary, Queen of Scots. During the Civil War, Sir James Stuart, 1st Baronet of Bute, supported the monarchy but was exiled and later fined under Cromwell. His descendants remained loyal to the Crown, and in 1703, James Stuart became the 1st Earl of Bute. His grandson, John Stuart, served as Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1762, concluding the Seven Years' War. By the 19th century, the family, notably the Marquesses of Bute, transformed Cardiff into a major coal port. The 3rd Marquess, a visionary, restored Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch, while his successors continued their legacy in politics, heritage preservation, and philanthropy. The Stuart lineage remains one of the most distinguished in Scottish noble history.
