The story of Clan Murray begins in the 12th century with Freskin, a Flemish knight granted lands in Moray and West Lothian by King David I of Scotland. Though some claim Pictish roots, it’s widely accepted that Freskin was one of the foreign nobles trusted to bring order to Scotland’s northern territories. His descendants adopted the name de Moravia, later anglicised to Murray, firmly embedding the clan in Scottish nobility.

Clan Murray rose to prominence through smart alliances and royal service. Sir Walter Murray became Lord of Bothwell and began building Bothwell Castle, a key stronghold. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Andrew Moray fought alongside William Wallace, playing a critical role in early Scottish victories. His son, Sir Andrew Murray, later became Regent of Scotland and married into the Bruce family.

By the 16th century, the Murrays of Tullibardine were widely recognised as clan chiefs, uniting the name under formal bonds of loyalty. In the 17th century, through marriage with the Stewart line, the Murrays became Earls, Marquesses, and ultimately Dukes of Atholl, one of the highest-ranking noble families in Scotland.

Clan Murray was deeply involved in the Jacobite risings, particularly under Lord George Murray, the tactical mind behind many early victories in the 1745 rebellion. Though the clan fought on both sides at Culloden, their legacy in Highland history remains significant.

Today, Clan Murray is celebrated for its loyalty, leadership, and military skill. The clan’s heritage continues through landmarks like Blair Castle, the historic seat of the Dukes of Atholl.

The Murray of Atholl Modern Tartan Kilt is a striking celebration of Scottish identity, blending timeless tradition with a vibrant, modern edge. This tartan features rich blues, bold greens, and vivid black accents – a fresh take on the classic Murray tartan pattern. Designed for those proud of their Murray clan roots, this kilt stands out at any event with its powerful presence and refined construction.
