Clan Montgomery traces its origins to the 12th century when the Montgomeries arrived in Scotland from Wales alongside the FitzAlans. Their name came from Welsh lands, but may also link to the Norman Counts de Montgomerie of Calvados. The first Scottish Montgomery was Robert of Montgomery, who held Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. The clan gained prominence in the 14th century through marriage to the Eglinton family, acquiring estates and influence. A fierce feud with Clan Cunningham began in the 15th century, leading to decades of violent conflict, including the murder of the 4th Earl of Eglinton in 1586. Montgomerys supported Mary, Queen of Scots, at the Battle of Langside in 1568, later backing Charles II during the Civil War. In the 18th century, the clan supported the government during the Jacobite risings. The 11th Earl raised the 77th Regiment, key to founding Pittsburgh. In the American Revolutionary War, General Richard Montgomery died during the failed invasion of Quebec, giving his name to many U.S. towns. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, famed for his WWII leadership at El Alamein and D-Day, was from the Ulster branch, cementing the clan's legacy in British military history.
