MacNaughton Ancient Tartan Kilt
Clan Macnaghten descends from early Pictish rulers of Moray. The name “Nectan” means pure or clear and was common in Pictish royal lines. In the 13th century, Gilchrist Macnaghten was granted keepership of Fraoch Eilean Castle on Loch Awe by King Alexander III.
During the Wars of Scottish Independence, the Macnaghtens first opposed Robert the Bruce but later fought with him at the Battle of Bannockburn. Despite their support, they gained little, and Clan Campbell soon dominated Loch Awe.
In the 15th century, the Macnaghtens accepted Campbell feudal overlordship. Sir Alexander Macnaghten survived the Battle of Flodden, and Dunderave Castle became the clan seat. The family later supported the French at La Rochelle (1627) and the Royalists in the Civil War.
By the late 17th century, land was lost due to debt and political conflict. John Macnaghten, the last chief of the original line, forfeited lands in 1710. In 1818, Edmond Alexander Macnaghten of the Irish branch was recognized as chief.
