The name Macpherson comes from Scottish Gaelic Mac a’ Phearsain, meaning “son of the parson.” Originating in Badenoch, the clan descends from Muireach, a priest in Kingussie. A key member of the Clan Chattan Confederation, Clan Macpherson played a major role in Highland history.

In 1309, Robert the Bruce rewarded them with lands in return for defeating Clan Comyn. Known as the Clan of the Three Brothers, they were active in the Battle of Invernahavon (1370) and North Inch (1396). The legendary Black Chanter, a clan relic, is kept at the Clan Macpherson Museum in Newtonmore.

The clan defended Ruthven Castle in 1594, supported Montrose during the Civil War, and played a prominent role in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745. Chief Cluny Macpherson famously evaded capture after Culloden and later escaped to France.

In the 1800s, the clan modernized estate management in Badenoch, converting lands to deer forests and sheep walks, while Cluny Castle, once destroyed, was rebuilt. Other key clan locations include Newton Castle, Invereshie House, Pitmain House, and the Clan Macpherson Museum.

The MacPherson Dress Ancient Tartan Kilt features a bold pattern of red, green, blue, and white, reflecting the historic colors of the MacPherson clan tartan. Woven in traditional tones, this authentic Scottish kilt connects wearers to centuries of Highland heritage. Ideal for formal events, Highland games, or casual wear, the Dress Ancient tartan offers a softer, weathered look compared to modern tartans.
