Macleod of Lewis Tartan Kilt
The Macleods of Lewis first appear in records during King David II’s reign (1329–1371), when Torcall Macleod received lands in Assynt. By 1344, they held the Isle of Lewis as vassals of the Macdonalds of Islay. The clan's power expanded across Lewis, Raasay, Waternish (Skye), Assynt, Coigach, and Gairloch.
In 1406, the Macleods of Lewis were defeated by the Mackays at the Battle of Tuiteam Tarbhach. The 16th century saw shifting alliances, with chief John Macleod supporting the MacDonalds of Sleat in territorial disputes.
The clan’s decline began with Ruairi Macleod’s conflicts over succession. Disputes between his sons Torquil Connanach and Torquil Dubh, fueled by Mackenzie ambitions, led to the loss of Lewis. The Mackenzies secured the island in 1597, and by the early 1600s, most of Ruairi’s descendants were executed, exiled, or driven off.
Eventually, the Macleod of Raasay line inherited the chiefship. Today, Clan Macleod of Lewis is led by Torquil Donald Macleod of The Lewes, based in Tasmania. The clan remains active globally through the Associated Clan MacLeod Societies. Recent DNA studies show Norse origins, linking the Macleods to early Viking settlers.
The Macleod of Lewis Tartan Kilt features a bold and striking design, showcasing a distinctive yellow background with black checks, often known as the Loud Macleod tartan. This vibrant pattern reflects the rich heritage and warrior spirit of the Clan Macleod of Lewis, symbolizing their historic lands in the Outer Hebrides. Crafted from high-quality wool, this traditional Scottish kilt offers durability and comfort, making it ideal for Highland games, weddings, and formal events.
Perfect for those proud of their Scottish roots, the Macleod of Lewis kilt pairs well with classic sporrans, jackets, and ghillie brogues. The kilt is available in tailored sizes for men and boys, suitable for clan gatherings and cultural celebrations.
