Clan MacLennan hails from Kintail in the Scottish Highlands and holds an ecclesiastical origin, derived from Gaelic names meaning “servant of St. Adamnan.” Early roots trace to Abbot MacLeinan, buried at St. Blane’s in 776 A.D. The clan’s name evolved from Mac Gille Adhamhnain, becoming MacLennan.
In 1372, the clan faced defeat at the Battle of Drumderfit, remembered by their war cry “Druim na Deur” (Ridge of Tears). By the 15th century, MacLennans allied with Clan Mackenzie, fighting alongside them at Bealach nam Broig in 1452. They later stood with the Mackenzies during the Civil War, showing valor under their chief Ruaridh at the Battle of Auldearn in 1645.
After suffering heavy losses, the clan had limited involvement in the Jacobite risings, though some were captured at Culloden in 1746. Many emigrated, and MacLennan names now mark regions in New Zealand and Texas.
The clan was without a chief for 300 years until Ronald George MacLennan was recognized in 1977. Today, Clan MacLennan remains active globally, with its chief residing in Farr, Inverness.
