MacLellan Ancient Tartan Kilt
The name MacLellan comes from Mac Gille Fhaolain, meaning “son of the servant of St Fillan.” First recorded in 1273, the clan’s roots trace back to Cane McGillolane, knight of John Balliol. His son, Donald Mac Cane, held Threave Island until ousted by Edward Bruce, sparking a fierce feud with the Black Douglases.
During the Wars of Scottish Independence, MacLellans supported Balliol against Robert the Bruce, capturing Dumfries Castle in 1305. In the 15th century, Sir Patrick MacLellan, Sheriff of Galloway, was murdered by Douglas, fueling vengeance and cementing the clan’s loyalty to the Scottish Crown. The family later supported the Stewart monarchy, fought in the Battle of Flodden, and built the iconic MacLellan’s Castle in Kirkcudbright.
By the 17th century, Sir Robert MacLellan was made Lord Kirkcudbright, though civil war debts led to the clan’s decline. The title became dormant in 1832.
The MacLellan Ancient Tartan Kilt is a symbol of proud Scottish clan heritage, showcasing the earthy green, blue, and black tones of the ancient MacLellan tartan. Woven in a classic sett, this kilt reflects the historical roots of the Clan MacLellan of Galloway, known for loyalty and strength.
