lan MacIain, a branch of Clan Donald, was founded by Iain Sprangach MacDonald ("John the Bold"), third son of Angus Mor MacDonald. The name "MacIain" means son of John in Gaelic. Iain received Ardnamurchan from his brother Angus Og, ally of Robert the Bruce. The MacIains became fierce supporters of the Lords of the Isles.

In the 15th century, they fought at the Battles of Harlaw (1411) and Inverlochy (1431). They resisted royal authority after 1493, notably retaking Dunaverty Castle from King James IV. Internal betrayal led to the death of Sir John MacDonald and others. In 1497, they executed Sir Alexander of Lochalsh, ending another rebellion.

The 16th century saw bloody feuds and civil war, including the Battle of the Shirts (1544). In 1596, Donald MacIain murdered his nephew John Og, sparking the Battle of Leac-nan-Saighead, where Donald was slain by the Camerons.

By the 1600s, the MacIains lost their lands to the Campbells and scattered across Moidart, Badenoch, the Lowlands, Ireland, and later America, Australia, and New Zealand. Their stronghold, Mingary Castle, resisted attacks including one aided by the Spanish Armada.

The MacDonald of Ardnamurchan Ancient Tartan Kilt reflects the proud history of one of Scotland’s most storied Highland clans. Worn by descendants of the MacIain branch of Clan Donald, this kilt features a muted, earthy color palette that mirrors the natural tones of the Scottish Highlands. With deep greens, soft blues, and subtle reds, the ancient version of the tartan gives an authentic, historical feel.
