Clan Lindsay, originating from the region of Lindsey in England, rose to prominence in both England and Scotland from the 11th century. The family’s Scottish legacy began with Sir Baldric de Lindsay’s descendants, who followed David of Scotland and settled in Scotland. William de Lindsay became Justiciar and Baron of Luffness, with his lineage continuing as the Earls of Crawford.

In the Wars of Scottish Independence, Sir David Lindsay’s grandson signed the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. Later, Sir James Lindsay married Egidia Stewart, linking the family to Robert the Bruce. David Lindsay was created the 1st Earl of Crawford in 1398, later serving as Admiral and ambassador.

The Lindsays took part in major battles like Brechin (1452), Flodden (1513), and Marston Moor (1644). During the civil war, Ludovic Lindsay supported the Royalists. The title passed to the Balcarres branch in the 19th century. Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres, supported the 1715 Jacobite rising, while John Lindsay, 20th Earl, led the government-aligned Black Watch in 1745.
