Clan Hamilton descends from Walter Fitz Gilbert of Hambledon, recorded around 1294 in a charter to Paisley Monastery. For supporting Robert the Bruce, he gained lands in Lanarkshire, including Cadzow, later known as Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.

The family name may link to Beaumont or Umfraville ancestry, with the first known ancestor appearing as Walter Fitz Gilbert of Hameldone. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, his loyalty earned land and prestige. His descendants, including David Hamilton, were active in key battles like Neville’s Cross (1346).

In the 15th century, James Hamilton married Princess Mary, daughter of James II. Their line produced James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran, and later the Duke of Châtellerault, once heir to the throne. The family’s power grew with estates like Brodick Castle and alliances with Mary, Queen of Scots.

During the 17th century, James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton, supported Charles I, led Royalist forces, and was executed in 1649. His brother William died at Worcester (1651). The line continued through Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess, and her son, James, 4th Duke, who died in a duel (1712).

The clan’s seat, Hamilton Palace, was one of Europe's grandest but demolished in 1921 due to mining damage. The family later moved to Dungavel House, then to Lennoxlove House, current seat of the Duke of Hamilton.

The Clan Hamilton Green Modern Scottish Tartan Kilt showcases a bold and contemporary design inspired by deep clan traditions. With its vibrant blend of forest green, navy, black, and subtle white accents, this modern Hamilton tartan kilt embodies elegance and Scottish pride.
