Clan Guthrie traces its name from ancient Angus, Scotland. The name possibly came from a tale of a fisherman who “gut three” fish for a king. In 1178, the lands were granted to Arbroath Abbey; the Guthries later became royal falconers and landowners.

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, a Guthrie was sent to France in 1299 to bring William Wallace back to Scotland. By the 15th century, the family rose in power—Sir David Guthrie became Lord Treasurer, built Guthrie Castle, and was named Lord Chief Justice of Scotland.

The Guthries fought at Flodden (1513), supported James VI in 1567, and were involved in long feuds with Clan Gardyne. In the 17th century, Bishop John Guthrie supported the king but was ousted in civil war. His son, Andrew, was executed in 1646. James Guthrie, a Covenanter preacher, was also martyred in 1661 for his defiance against royal religious policies.

In later centuries, Clan Guthrie remained influential—serving as royal falconers, military officers, and clergymen. Guthrie Castle stayed in family hands until 1984. Today, the legacy lives on through organizations like Clan Guthrie USA.

The Guthrie Ancient Tartan Kilt embodies the timeless legacy of Clan Guthrie from Angus, Scotland. Featuring a softer, earthy palette of faded green, light blue, and rustic orange, this tartan reflects the natural dyes used in early Scottish fabrics, offering an authentic Highland appearance.
