Clan Gordon is one of the most influential Highland clans of Scotland, with ancestral lands centered in Aberdeenshire at Aboyne Castle. The clan’s powerful legacy traces back to Richard of Gordon, a Norman knight’s descendant, who first settled in the Merse region during the reign of King Malcolm III.

Gordons gained early prominence during the Wars of Scottish Independence, backing William Wallace and later Robert the Bruce. Through marriage, leadership passed to the Seton family, whose descendants adopted the Gordon name and continued the chiefship.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Clan Gordon fought pivotal battles including Otterburn, Homildon Hill, and Brechin, expanding influence under the title Earl of Huntly. Known as “Cock o’ the North,” their chiefs opposed rivals like the Douglases and Clan Forbes, culminating in infamous feuds and the Battle of Glenlivet.

During the 17th-century Civil War, the Gordons staunchly supported the Royalists, forming the famed Gordon Horse cavalry. The clan was divided in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745, with many joining the Stuart cause while some supported the Hanoverians.

The clan's military legacy lives on through the Gordon Highlanders, raised in 1794. The chief of Clan Gordon remains Granville Gordon, 13th Marquess of Huntly, bearer of arms rich in heraldic symbols.

Clan Gordon tartans, especially the Gordon Modern based on the 92nd Regiment pattern, are iconic Scottish symbols worn with pride by Highlanders and cultural groups worldwide.
