The Fraser surname likely originates from Anjou, France, with early forms like "de Fresel" and "de Friselle" appearing in Scotland in the 12th century. Though links to French nobility remain debated, Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, formally declared kinship with the French Marquis de la Frézelière in 1702.

By the Wars of Scottish Independence, the Frasers had firmly rooted in Scotland. Sir Simon Fraser famously defeated the English at Roslin (1303) and saved Robert the Bruce at Methven (1306). His cousin, Alexander Fraser, later married Bruce’s sister and became Chamberlain of Scotland, founding the Frasers of Philorth, while another Simon Fraser founded the Frasers of Lovat.

The clan battled in numerous Highland feuds, especially against the MacDonalds, including the bloody Battle of the Shirts (1544). Frasers supported Mary, Queen of Scots at Inverness (1562) and opposed Montrose at Auldearn (1645).

During the Jacobite risings, Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, infamously switched loyalties. His clan fought at Culloden (1746) where many Frasers died. Lovat was later executed for treason, but his son regained some lands for military service in Canada.

The Fraser Clan today remains strong, with a proud legacy of warriors, loyalty, and Highland tradition.
