The Clan Lennox originates from the ancient earldom of Lennox, once covering Dumbartonshire and parts of Perthshire, Stirlingshire, and Renfrewshire. The name derives from the Gaelic "Leven-ach," meaning "smooth stream." Early lineage includes Arkyll, a Saxon baron granted lands by King Malcolm III, whose son Ailín I became the first Earl of Lennox.

The clan played a crucial role during the Wars of Scottish Independence, with Malcolm, 5th Earl, supporting Robert the Bruce. Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, Lennox lands passed through notable families including the Stewarts of Darnley. The powerful Stewart-Lennox alliance reached its peak with Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, husband to Mary, Queen of Scots.

The Lennoxes of Woodhead, a prominent cadet branch, became recognized chiefs in the 19th century, although the earldom itself was not restored. The clan’s historic seats include Lennox Castle, Balloch Castle, and Woodhead Castle.

In modern times, Clan Lennox remains active under Chief Edward Lennox of that Ilk and Woodhead. The clan tartan, revived from a 16th-century portrait, connects today's members with a storied past of honor, nobility, and leadership.

The Clan Lennox Ancient Tartan Kilt features soft, earthy tones of green, tan, and faded blue, reflecting the natural dyes used in early Scottish weaving. This traditional kilt honors the ancient lineage of the Lennox clan, whose roots trace back to the powerful Earls of Lennox in medieval Dumbartonshire.
