The name Keith comes from the Cumbric word coed, meaning “wood.” The clan's legendary founder, a Chatti warrior known as Camus Slayer, was honored by Malcolm II of Scotland for killing the Danish general Camus at the Battle of Barrie (1010), marking the origin of the clan's three red stripes in its heraldry.

The Keiths of Lothian emerged after Malcolm II's victory at the Battle of Carham (1018), with the family taking their name from the land granted in the region. In the 12th century, Hervey de Keith became Marischal of Scotland, a hereditary royal office.

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Sir Robert de Keith commanded cavalry at Bannockburn (1314). His descendants became Earls Marischal, establishing strongholds like Dunnottar Castle. The clan feuded with Clan Irvine and Clan Gunn, with major battles including Drumoak and the Battle of Champions.

In the 16th century, Keiths supported the Reformation and founded Marischal College. Later, they were involved in the Jacobite risings, losing lands after 1715. Despite this, the Keiths gained high honors in Prussia and Russia, with key figures like George Keith and James Keith playing diplomatic and military roles.

In modern times, peace treaties ended centuries-old feuds with Clan Gunn (1978) and Clan Irvine (2002), marking a legacy of reconciliation and enduring Scottish clan heritage.

The Clan Keith Modern Scottish Tartan Kilt showcases a bold and contemporary interpretation of one of Scotland’s most historic clans. Woven with striking hues of deep red, forest green, navy blue, and black, this modern tartan reflects the enduring strength and loyalty of the Keith lineage.
