Clan Johnstone, a powerful Border Reiver Scottish clan, originated in Annandale and held lands in the western Scottish Marches for over 600 years. Their earliest recorded ancestor was John Johnstone, with his lineage traced back to Gilbert after 1194. Sir John Johnstone pledged allegiance to Edward I in 1296, and his great-grandson became Warden of the Western Marches in 1381. The clan is believed to descend from Siward, Earl of Northumbria.
In the 15th century, Adam Johnstone, the first Laird of Johnstone, fought at the Battle of Sark and helped suppress the Clan Douglas, gaining lands from the Crown. The clan had violent feuds, notably with Clan Moffat, whom they nearly wiped out in 1557, and Clan Maxwell, who lost many men at the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593. Maxwell later murdered the Johnstone chief in 1608 but was executed for the act.
In the 17th century, James Johnstone was made Earl of Hartfell and later Earl of Annandale and Hartfell by Charles II. Another branch, the Johnstones of Caskieben, received a baronetcy in Nova Scotia in 1626. The 3rd Marquess of Annandale died in 1792, leaving the title dormant until it was revived in the late 20th century.
Today, the clan is led by the 11th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, 26th Chief of Clan Johnstone. The Johnstone tartan, published in 1842, remains a symbol of clan pride and heritage.
