Clan Hannay of Sorbie Ancient Scottish Tartan Kilt
Clan Hannay originates from ancient Galloway, with early spellings like Ahannay possibly derived from Gaelic O'Hannaidh. In 1296, Gilbert de Hannethe submitted to Edward I via the Ragman Rolls. The clan supported John Balliol, linking them to the Celtic Princes of Galloway.
By the 15th and 16th centuries, the Hannays built Sorbie Tower, their ancestral seat. In the 17th century, a deadly feud with Clan Murray of Broughton led to their outlawing and migration to Ulster, where the Hannay name remains common in County Antrim, Down, and Armagh.
Notable Hannays include Patrick Hannay, court poet to Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia, and James Hannay, Dean of St Giles, famously attacked during the 1637 liturgical riot. In 1630, Sir Robert Hannay of Mochrum was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia.
Later, Alexander Hannay of Kirkdale established the line now recognized as the chiefs of Clan Hannay. His descendants include Colonel Alexander Hannay in India and Sir Samuel Hannay, whose mansion inspired Walter Scott’s Guy Mannering. The clan’s current chief descends from this line.
