Clan MacKinnon is an ancient Highland clan of Norse-Gaelic origin, historically linked to the Isle of Skye, Mull, and Iona. According to legend, the clan descends from Findanus, who married "Saucy Mary," a Norwegian princess who built Caisteal Maol to collect tolls from passing ships. The clan’s name comes from the Gaelic Mac Fhionghuin, meaning "fair born," and has deep ties to early Christian abbots of Iona Abbey.

In the Wars of Scottish Independence, Clan MacKinnon supported Robert the Bruce and later gained lands in Skye. They were closely allied with the Lords of the Isles but gained more independence after the forfeiture of the Lordship in the late 15th century. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the clan feuded with the Macleans and allied variously with MacDonalds and MacGregors. They signed bonds of manrent affirming descent from Siol Alpin, suggesting kinship with Clan Gregor.

During the Jacobite uprisings, Clan MacKinnon supported the Stuarts in both 1715 and 1745, raising a battalion for Bonnie Prince Charlie. After the defeat at Culloden, the chief sheltered the prince but was later captured and tried. Due to his age, he was pardoned, though the clan lost its lands at Strathardle in 1765.

Today, Madam Anne Gunhild Mackinnon serves as the 38th Chief of Clan MacKinnon. The clan is celebrated for its rich history, warrior legacy, and sacred ties to Iona, where MacKinnon’s Cross still stands.

The MacKinnon Red Modern Tartan Kilt showcases bold red tones accented with black, forest green, and sky blue stripes, reflecting the strength and pride of Clan MacKinnon. Woven in a modern color palette, this kilt represents the evolution of traditional Highland wear while honoring ancestral heritage.
