Clan MacBean, also spelled McBain, traces its roots to the ancient Clan Chattan confederation and descends from Gillichattan Mor. The name likely derives from the Gaelic Beathan meaning “lively one,” or from Bàn meaning “fair” or “white.” Dr. Alexander MacBain, a respected Gaelic scholar, confirmed the origin from Beatha (life), forming the basis of the name MacBean/McBain.

The clan originally settled near Lochaber and later moved to Inverness-shire, primarily around Dores, Strathnairn, and Tomatin. They were early supporters of Clan Mackintosh and fought bravely in major battles such as the Battle of Harlaw (1411) and Culloden (1746). Major Gillies MacBean gained fame at Culloden for his fearless last stand.

In the 18th century, many clan members supported the Jacobite risings, leading to exile in America. Later, distinguished military service was seen in members like William MacBean, VC winner in India, and Forbes MacBean, a key officer in the Boer War.

The chiefly line continued in Canada and the USA, with Hughston McBain officially recognized as 21st Chief in 1966. His descendants, including the current chief Richard McBain of McBain, have preserved the clan’s legacy through the McBain Memorial Park near Loch Ness.

Famous descendants include NASA astronaut Alan Bean, who took the MacBean tartan to the Moon, and Judge Roy Bean, the legendary Wild West figure.

The MacBean Modern Tartan Kilt showcases a bold pattern of deep red, forest green, navy, and black tones, symbolizing the strength and legacy of Clan MacBean.
