The Boyle surname traces back to Beuville, Normandy. The family established roots in Scotland by the 12th century, with Richard de Boyville holding lands in Ayrshire by 1275 and later serving as keepers of key castles. The Boyles pledged allegiance to Edward I in 1296 and intermarried with noble houses like the Comyns.

In 1488, John Boyle died at the Battle of Sauchieburn supporting King James III. Though their estates were lost, they were later restored. The family supported Mary, Queen of Scots, and remained loyal to the monarchy during the English Civil War, suffering losses under Charles I.

The Boyle legacy grew when David Boyle became Lord Boyle of Kelburn in 1699 and Earl of Glasgow in 1703. He supported the 1707 Act of Union and fought against the 1715 Jacobite uprising.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Boyles served as military leaders, Lords Lieutenant, and legal figures like Lord Justice General David Boyle. The 7th Earl, David Boyle, served as Governor of New Zealand and was later named Baron Fairlie in the UK Peerage, ensuring a seat in the House of Lords.

The Boyle Tartan Kilt is a striking representation of one of Scotland’s noble families, rooted in centuries of loyalty, service, and tradition. With deep ties to Ayrshire and Kelburn Castle, Clan Boyle played a vital role in Scottish and British history, with members serving as military leaders, statesmen, and even governors.
