The Clan MacThomas originated in the 15th century with Tomaidh Mòr, a Highland Gaelic-speaking grandson of the chief of Clan Mackintosh. Seeking independence from the growing Clan Chattan, Thomas led his followers over the Grampians to Glen Shee. There, the clan flourished under the names McComie, McColm, and McComas. Early chiefs ruled from the Thom near Spittal of Glenshee, and later from Finegand, known for its dramatic “burn of the heads” tale.

During the 17th century, Chief Iain Mòr McComie became a local legend, opposing tax collectors and fighting alongside the royalists during the Scottish Civil War. His conflicts with the Earl of Airlie and Clan Farquharson led to tragedy and the eventual loss of clan lands.

By the 18th century, many MacThomases had resettled in Fife and Dundee, adopting names like Thomson, Thoms, and Thomas. The clan regained influence in agriculture, politics, and law, with chiefs serving as MPs, sheriffs, and civic leaders.

Today, Clan MacThomas remains active, with members gathering every three years in Glenshee, honoring their deep Scottish heritage and proud Highland traditions.
