Clan MacFarlane traces its roots to the original Earls of Lennox, though the exact origins remain debated—some historians suggest Anglo-Saxon descent from Arkil, a Northumbrian chief, while others propose Gaelic ancestry. The clan’s name derives from Parlan (Bartholomew), grandson of Donnchadh, who secured lands in Arrochar that the MacFarlanes held for centuries. Despite supporting the Stewart Earls of Lennox loyally, the clan suffered greatly after the execution of Donnchadh, Earl of Lennox, in 1425. The MacFarlanes played key roles in historic Scottish battles, including the Battle of Glasgow Muir (1544) and the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (1547), where their chief Duncan was killed. Known for their fierce loyalty, the clan fought under Regent James Stewart at the Battle of Langside in 1568, earning the MacFarlane chief a crest symbolizing defense of the Scottish crown. Throughout the turbulent 16th century, the clan remained influential, even facing sieges and destruction of their stronghold Inveruglas. Today, Clan MacFarlane stands as a proud Highland clan with a rich legacy tied to the Lennox region and Scottish history.
