Clan Johnstone was one of the most powerful Border Reiver clans in Scottish history, originally settling in Annandale, where they held lands for over 600 years, guarding the western Scottish Marches against England. The first recorded Johnstone was John Johnstone, with his lineage traced back to the 12th century. Their ancestral roots are believed to be Norman and Anglo-Saxon, descending from Siward, Earl of Northumbria.

Notable early figures include Sir John Johnstone, who pledged allegiance to Edward I in 1296, and his descendant, Adam Johnstone, the first Laird of Johnstone, who fought at the Battle of Sark in 1448. The clan played a key role in suppressing the Douglas rebellion, gaining lands in return. Throughout the 16th century, the Johnstones clashed with neighboring clans like the Moffats and Maxwells, leading to historic feuds, including the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593.

In the 17th century, the Johnstones rose in nobility. James Johnstone was made Earl of Hartfell, and later, his son was titled Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. The family continued to influence politics, with William Johnstone becoming the Marquess of Annandale in 1701. Though the title eventually became dormant, Clan Johnstone’s legacy lives on in Scottish history, remembered for their strength, loyalty, and role in defending the borderlands
