The origin of this family name is associated with the Barony of Johnston in Annandale in the Annandale area, where the Border clan settled in the 13th century. Some of them invested a lot in the Border conflict and had a lot of influence. The Crown was on their side. Sir James Johnston of Johnston was created the 1st Lord Johnston of Lochwood in 1633.
Ten years later he was created Earl of Hartfell and his son was created the Earl of Annandale in 1661.
