The name of the clan originates from Farquhar Shaw, the fourth son of Alexander `Ciar’ Mackintosh of Rothiemurchus, the fifth Chief of the Clan Shaw who relocated to the Braes of Mar. Among the bearers of this last name, one descendant was slain at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547 while serving his duty as the King’s standard-bearer.
It is in 1595 the Gaelic family affiliated it in the Chattan Confederation. Braemar Castle was handed over to Farquharson and remains the family residence till this time. The Farquharson have always been supporters of the House of Stuart and in 1689, John Farquharson of Inverey renewed his support to John Graham of Claverhouse of Dundee-better known as Bonnie Dundee. The Farquharson Modern Tartan is of mainly light blue color with few streaks of light green-black and orangey-red color also present.
