Clan Campbell was important in the West of Scotland and in Argyllshire. They were known by the name of Diarmid and were granted the title Lordship Lochow at the morning of the 13th century. Colin Campbell of Lochow, the father of the Campbells from Argyll got knighted around 1280. latterly, the chiefs were Earls Argyll as well. In 1701 William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. The 9th Earl was executed in 1685 over his participation in the Monmouth Rebellion.
